History and methodology

The author of the book is the former coach of the Czech Fencing Club Riegel - Čestmír Čivrný (1925—2011). From 1968 he worked as a coach in what was then West Germany. These are actually comprehensive textbooks (originally published in German under the title Fleuret). The reader gets their hands on an exhaustive textbook of sport foil fencing, taking into account the available literature. All actions, techniques, etc. are described taking into account Czech, German, French and Italian nomenclature. An integral part of the book is a comprehensive history of foil fencing. The book is intended not only “for beginners”, as the author writes in the introduction, but especially for coaches and for all lovers and practitioners of fencing with this highly technical weapon — regardless of whether they are sport or historical fencers. Čivrný adds in the introduction:

“This publication is intended to convey to trainers and coaches the knowledge of multifaceted fencing techniques and tactics and the possibilities of how to pass them on to their pupils. A retrospective historical view shows the importance of the coach from ancient times to the present day. In ancient times, a coach was already viewed as a doctor for a healthy person, and so he had to have the appropriate knowledge. According to Plato's conception, the coach's role in teaching and education required an educated teacher.

Although the function of the coach or trainer is strongly influenced by practice and will certainly continue to be so, they must cope in theory with an extensive range of complex questions. This book is supposed to help them do that. It is also intended to contribute to unity and cooperation between teacher and pupil. Training should not only be about sharing performance, it should also create personality.”
